Lia’s Socks
Before going to Florida (Video from that trip here: Clearwater Marine Aquarium) I knitted a pair of socks for my Tante Freerkje and started on a second pair for my cousin, Lia.
Here is my finished product and the pattern (after the cut):

Cuff:
Cast on 72 stitches (I use DPNs and cast 18 stitches to each needle).
Work 10 rounds of K1, P1 rib.
Pattern:
Rows 1 to 4: *K4, P2 repeat to *
Row 5 (standard 4 stitch cable): *slip 2 stitches to cable needle and hold infront of work, k2, knit the two stitches from the cable needle, p2*
Repeat rows 1-5 as many times as preferred, end on row 2.
Heel:
move the last purl stitch from needle 4 to needle one, and move one purl stitch from needle 2 to needle 3. You will do the heel flap across needles 4 and 3.
Left sock:
Row 1: Turn, s1, k2, purl to end.
Row 2: Turn, sl1, p2, k1 *k1, s1 (14 times)*, k3.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 nine more times.
Repeat row 1.
Turn, sl1, p2, knit to end.
Turn, sl 1,p19, p2tog, p1.
Turn, sl1, k5, skk, k1.
Next row, sl 1, purl to one stitch before gap, purl 2 tog, p1
Next row, sl 1, knit to one stitch before the gap, ssk, k1
Continue till all stitches have been worked.
Right sock (pretty much the same as above, the difference is in row 2):
Row 1: Turn, s1, k2, purl to end.
Row 2: Turn, sl1, p2, *k1, s1 (14 times)*, k4.
Repeat rows 1 and 2 nine more times.
Repeat row 1.
Turn, sl1, p2, knit to end.
Turn, sl 1,p19, p2tog, p1.
Turn, sl1, k5, skk, k1.
Next row, sl 1, purl to one stitch before gap, purl 2 tog, p1
Next row, sl 1, knit to one stitch before the gap, ssk, k1
Continue till all stitches have been worked.
Gusset:
Pick up as many stitches as needed, I picked up 15 from each side.
Knit across instep in established pattern (except there is 1p at the beginning and only 1p at the end).
Distribute the 20 stitches you have left from the heel flap across needles 3 and 4.
Round 1 (Decrease round) –
Needle 4: Knit until 3 sts remain, ssk, k1.
Needles 1&2, continue as established, in pattern,
Needle 3: k1, k2tog, knit to end.
Round 2 –
Needle 3&4, Knit all stitches. Needles 2 & 3, continue as established.
Decrease until there are 18 stitches each on needles 3 and 4.
Foot:
Knit in the established pattern until the sock is “long enough” about 7inches. If you feel comfortable putting an inprogress work on your foot… it should stop just before the 1st knuckle of your big toe. (Note: some knitters have graciously tattoed this spot on their foot for their own and others’ reference, look here: link)
To start decreasing for the toe:
End pattern on row 2.
Knit 2 rows. (Rearrange stitches so there are 18 stitches on each needle, in other words move 1 stitch from needle 2 to needle 1)
Round 1 (Decrease round) –
Needle 4: Knit until 3 sts remain, ssk, k1.
Needles 1: k1, k2tog, knit to end.
Needle 2: Knit until 3 sts remain, ssk, k1.
Needle 3: k1, k2tog, knit to end.
Round 2 –
Knit all stitches.
Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until there are 9 stitches on each needle. At that point, repeat Round 1 until 4 stitches remain on each needle.
Graft closed using the kitchener stitch. (Note: if you are like me and dislike kitchener stitching to finish, look here: link)
